 Acne Remedies That Work

Tom Fowler just spied his first blackhead before going to his American Liturature class. You can just imagine his worry as he imagined that everyone was staring at him. Fortunately for Tom there are great things he can do for his acne.

Acne can be a problem for just about anyone, causing breakouts without regard to age, race or gender. Most that suffer from acne, though, are teens and young adults. It is estimated that upwards of 85% of people who are this age are afflicted with acne and of those 23% will suffer from prolonged scarring that can be anything from minimal to severe.

Those over 24, though, are not guaranteed freedom from the heartbreak of acne. The American Dermatologist Association reports that 20% of all adults have active acne lesions. This boils down to the fact that 60 million American teens through adults have active acne skin lesions and 20 million of these have acne that is extensive enough to cause scarring. Surprisingly, only about 11% of acne sufferers will ask for medical advice, but this is due, in part, to the the way people treat those with acne.

There is reason to have hope, though, for those afflicted by acne. On learning what causes acne, the things that help and the things that don't help and how to prevent your acne, you can take those steps to get skin that is glowing and clear.

What Causes Acne?

While acne skin lesions and the resultant scarring is not contagious, there are several things that do contribute to a case of getting acne lesions. In general terms, acne is caused when the sebaceous glands produce excess oil. Other causes can include:

* An inherited tendency towards acne or genetics  * Pollutants in the environment  * Physical irritation  * Hormones and hormone imbalances  * Humidity  * Some illnesses  * Cosmetics that are oil based  * Over washing the skin  * Stress and anxiety  * Poor cleansing of the skin

Don’t Waste your Time and Money

While some acne solutions help, many will not. When picking out an over the counter remedy, be careful. Many of the acne remedies on the shelves today have harsh components that can really dry out your skin, and can even make your acne worse. Pick out your acne cleasing and treatment products carefully and look for products that are soothing.

What Really Works

Four things are guaranteed to help acne. Together they pack a powerful punch to make acne a thing of the past.

* Healthy diet  * Proper cleansing  * Adequate sleep  * Water

To treat acne you already have, try natural products such as tea tree oil which has strong antiseptic properties and is really quite effective. Witch hazel is an effective skin toner and it can give you a healthy glow. Mint is a good spot treatment, especially for cystic acne. It has properties that cool and sooth the skin while killing germs in the process.

A good firming and cleansing mask that you can make with minimal effort is a corn starch and egg white mask. Make a paste with the egg white and corn starch. Apply to your clean skin and allow to dry. Remove with a wet washcloth and rinse well. You will end up with zit free skin.

An Ounce of Prevention…

Prevention is an easy way to avoid acne in the first place. The best way to avoid acne is to take good care of yourself. A sensible, low fat diet that includes a good variety of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables will help keep you acne free. Dark green leafy vegetables, like spinach, are great acne fighters. You should also drink plenty of water to keep your body well hydrated. Getting enough sleep is another easy beauty tool. Physicians want you to get about seven hours of sleep a night.

One more thing, proper cleaning of your skin is vital for keeping it clear. Take time to clean your skin at least once a day. If you wear cosmetic makeup, make sure that you take it off each night before bed. When you wash your skin, use a cleanser that is gentle and be sure that the water is not too hot. Don’t scrub because that can increase your acne. Rinse well and blot dry with a clean towel. When you take the time to prevent acne, you won’t have to hide those blemishes.
